I was a long time Larry Mendte fan.
I followed him from his Access Hollywood Days to his co-anchor days opposite Renee Chenault-Fattah at NBC 10.
When he left NBC 10 for CBS 3 to co-anchor with Alycia Lane, I happily jumped with him. I loved the interaction between him and Alycia.
I enjoyed the continuity between him and Kathy Orr who had been a meterologist at NBC 10 before her first pregnancy advanced far enough for her to take her maternity leave. It was a pleasant surprise to find her again as the Chief Meterologist at CBS 3.
I hate to say this but when John Bolaris left NBC 10 as their Chief Meteorologist after 9/11 NBC 10 made a HUUUUGGGGGEEEE mistake in making Glenn (Ho Hum) Hurricane Schwartz the head honcho of the weather department. I cannot imagine anyone more snooze inducing, can you?
Of course they also added Ferret face John Clark to the Sports Team another poor choice...not a yawner...his voice is too loud, and his nose too crooked...which makes me wonder why so many women thought he was CUTE...did all of Philly have problems with their horizontal holds all of a sudden?
Anyway...back to Larry Mendte...when he jumped ship from NBC 10 I was not the least bit saddened. Kathy Orr had left. John Bolaris, one of the absolute BEST reasons to watch NBC 10 had gone and now the only reason left to watch NBC 10 had moved on.
Alycia and Larry worked well together. We grew to adore Alycia and felt her pain when her first marriage failed...how could we not? We also cheered when Larry, a man past the blush of spry youth announced he and his current wife Fox News co-anchor Dawn Stensland were expecting a child.
We celebrated the approach of Kathy Orr's second child. We applauded Alycia's second marriage and wished her nothing but joy and a future filled with much happiness, and then Larry's second announcement of impending fatherhood.
My daughter and I gasped when we learned that Alycia was in trouble with the law and could not believe she would not be there to greet us on our TV screen any longer. It was inconceivable that she could be guilty of the crime she was being charged with...but that shock was nothing compared to what would come to light very shortly about Larry Mendte.
This man we had followed from the days of Access Hollywood's inception. This man who had left the glitz of Hollywood for the less prestigious position of a Philiadelphia news anchor so he could remove his children from the corrupt Hollywood influences growing up. He could NOT be guilty of what the Federal Investigators were charging him of!
He could not have sunk so low!
He could not be THAT sleazy!
But he plead guilty to THOUSANDS of counts of being THAT sleazy...and why?
Because he thought Alycia was overshadowing his star quality?
For that he reduced himself to being nothing more than a cyberspace peeping tom and schoolyard bully?
For that he committed felony after felony?
What kind of an example is that for those children he yanked away from the corruption of Hollywood?
What kind of an example is he to the children he has since created with his new wife Dawn Stensland?
His children will never escape from the stain of their father's deeds. He is a celebrity and now he is a celebrity that has made a mockery of all that he had ever accomplished.
In his speech before being sentenced today, he said he is very sorry for what he did to Alycia Lane and that he knows that what he did was wrong.
His wife also said that she hopes Alycia can forgive them and let the healing begin.
Had Larry Mendte not gotten caught, would he ever have acknowledged his wrongdoing? Would he ever have acknowledged the harm he inflicted on Alycia Lane?
Would Dawn Stensland have been made aware of this darker, perverted, weaker side of her husband?
Trust?
I would very much like to see Alycia Lane return...but Larry Mendte...you showed your feet of clay. You showed that your star is a tarnished one that was always meant to weaken.
You chose a career that by its very description has a limited lifespan. There is always going to be someone in the wings coming up behind you eager and more talented ready and waiting to take your place.
No one's star can shine brightly forever.
Not even the one's created by God shine forever...that's why they go Super Nova.
You just couldn't handle the truth...you are a middle aged man who was co-anchoring with a beautiful, vibrant, intelligent younger woman.
Instead of being grateful for the opportunity to continue basking in her reflected glory, you had to try to destroy it.
But in the end, you destroyed yourself.
Sad...pitiful...rank old man. That is all you are, a sad, pitiful, rank old man who must wear an electronic cuff for the next six months monitoring your every step. A pathetic shell who cannot leave his home without permission from the Federal Government. And then for three more years a man who must be monitored and graded by his parole officer because you couldn't keep your warped ego from stepping over the criminal line.

I too couldn't believe it. I liked him. He had a great sense of humor. I still remember how he took it in stride, even laughed at himself when CBS 3 aired their blooper videos and showed him falling face first into the floodwaters. I still find it so hard to believe that he would sink so low. What was he thinking?
I still like him. A guy who was that good and has done so much fr the community doesn't just do something like this without a reason. I believe him when he says his job was being threatened because he has been honest about everything else. I don't think he was jealous..as they said in court he did this because he felt undermined. It is a shame. And, by the way, 50 is not that old :)
