LJ HOLMES PRESENTS: EARLY RELEASE FOR BAD BEHAVIOR

Freedom.

Never realized before just how

valuable it is, or how much I'd

miss it when it is all

gone.

I wear perpeutual orange and live on

Death Row. Let me assure you, this is

not a nice place to spend a day let alone the years it takes before the

Grim Reaper comes to

yank you from your

miniscule cell, and limited existence.

Twenty-four hours...that's how long each day stretches. Here on

Death Row all but

one of those hours is spent counting the pock marks in three

cement structured walls.

You all know what the fourth wall is made of...

metal bars too small for you to squeeze more than a leg between them at any given moment...

oh and it's

not encouraged that you do even THAT much.

With twenty three hours to stare at nothing but your tiny space, you quickly discover your

ears become amplifliers. If there is any movement out in the hall, your vibrating

ear hair picks it up.

That's what has me worried.

There's been a whole lot of activity going on of late. My fellow Death Row Inhabitants are being

taken from their cells at odd times, and even though I cannot see them when they get back,

they're different...really, really different.

Knowing you're facing that

lethal injection is bad enough when you have

twenty three uninterupted hours to think about it, but it's something else entirely to be taken from

your isolation, carted off somewhere beyond

the cell block door only to be returned

different. I don't want to be...

different!

Holy Hell! He's here, the

GUARD, now, demanding I put my hands through for the

shackles. It's not time for my

hour away from the cell...

I DON'T WANT TO BE DIFFERENT!

HELP! What are the

 demons beyond

that door going to do to me?

LJ HOLMES PRESENTS: A FORK IN THE ROAD

Okay, I don't believe in things

that go Bump In The Night, or reek of

FANTASY.

I mean seriously, take

Red Riding Hood. How butt ugly must her

Grandma have been for Red not to see that

wasn't her Gramma the minute she entered the cottage? Was Red's eyesight, despite being a little kid,

that bad? And if it was, why would her parents allow her to go skipping off into

the woods with a known wolf on the

prowl?

My friend Mary Compton, is a really, really

talented writer, or she would be if she'd just write about believable things. She's taken to writing

ADULT

FAIRY

TALES!

Adult Fairy Tales...yeah, she IS selling her stories, but just to mediocre

fantasy magazines. Not anywhere the

REAL world would be interested in! She gives them to me to read, but honestly,

I hide them. Can you imagine if my friends saw them? Give me a good old copy of

COMPUTERS I LONG TO

BYTE. At least if my buds see THAT magazine in my place, they won't ridicule me.

But Mary is always trying to pawn her latest story on me, forcing me to have

to cross my fingers and

lie through my teeth when she asked if I've read them. It is just sooo

exhausting.

Today I am hoping our

trip into the Country for a leisurely

picnic I'll finally convince her she needs to start writing stuff that will...well...

sell...everywhere!

Hang on a sec.

What's this? There's a fork in the road. I can just about see it through all the

dust. Don't remember this stretch looking like this, and hey!

The sun's wrong. What the

devil's going on here?
